Confirmation marks the point in the Christian journey at which a person affirms for him/herself the faith into which he/she has been baptized and his/her intention to live a life of committed discipleship. This affirmation is confirmed through prayer and the laying on of hands by the confirming bishop. The Church also asks God to give the confirmand power through the Holy Spirit to enable him/her to live in the way of Jesus. So, in addition to affirming a person’s faith in Jesus, confirmation is like a lay ordination in that the Holy Spirit is asked to empower the person to live for and serve the Lord by using the gifts he/she has received from God.
